Sickness Again
Tuesday, 26 May 2009
Weren’t we just sick? Yes, I believe so. This time, everyone has fallen ill, so things here pretty much stopped over the weekend. Usually I’m upset if I happen to be sick on a weekend, especially a three day holiday, but this time I was glad to have The Daddy Monkey home.
So on Monday, I took the day off for the first time in five years. I did not clean, cook, or do anything more strenuous than make myself a sandwich. The Daddy Monkey did the majority of the parenting while I lounged on the couch watching The Food Network all day. This is a Really. Big. Deal.
We are raising the kids tv free. While the kids are awake, we do not have the tv on. The Boy declared halfway through the day on Monday that he likes cooking shows.
I’m not much of a tv watcher, and I have not parked myself in front of the tv like that since before The Boy was born. Let me say this: I highly recommend it.
I’m trying really hard to not be black-and-white about this. I usually make myself crazy about things like this. I get it in my head to eliminate plastic and start fretting over every little plastic thing in our lives. I decide to go organic, and freak out because not everything is organic. I decide we’re not going to watch tv, and feel like I’m cheating when I turn it on.
Enough personal guilt already, I have enough in my life making me crazy. I don’t need to inflict craziness upon myself.
So I relaxed all day, went to bed early, and slept in today. And I couldn’t believe how much better I felt when I woke up this morning.
And feeling much better today, we watched only about an hour of tv. Guilt free. After we played Go Fish, of course.

Glad to hear you are finding a bit of that balance you’ve been seeking. No Plastic. All Organic. No TV. It’s all equally important & unimportant at the same time. A good dose of equanimity does us all a lot of good.

So glad you got some much needed rest. Speaking of food…I am reading a book right now that I think you would find interesting. The Omnivore’s Dilemma by Michael Pollan. Check it out if you haven’t already.

You crack me up! This was great to read. Personally, I love me some TV, my kids watch it everyday, and they are quite awesome, brilliant, creative, and imaginative (might I add). You are such a good mama, all those little things (TV, plastic, organic) are secondary and pale in comparison to who you are and how you treat your children. Oh, and the Food Network, love it! Good for you for watching to your hearts content when you really needed to have some chill-time. :)
