Introducing The (New) Featherweight
Tuesday, 22 June 2010
I didn’t think it would happen this soon, but here she is. My new Featherweight. I am so in love with this machine. Now I know what my kids feel like when they get a new toy from the store and can’t wait to get it home to play with it.
We’re not having much luck getting an exact date on the machine, but she was made in Great Britain sometime after 1935.
The Daddy Monkey bought her for me. And it wasn’t even my birthday. He said to me, “You deserve it.” I don’t usually think of myself in that way, it seems somewhat self indulgent. But if there’s anything this upcoming trip to NYC has taught me, it’s that I do alot of sewing. This little machine, who came with nothing but her case, has been used constantly since her arrival. And it is so much fun. Such a pleasure. I can’t really say why. She’s well designed and pretty to look at. I love the way she sounds when she sews, it’s unlike any machine I’ve ever used. I’ve been sewing nonstop for the past month to get ready for this vacation. Sewing for myself, which is something I haven’t done in earnest for years.
So I guess in a way, it is a bit self indulgent.
(Thank you, Red. I love you.)

Awwww. This is such a sweet post. And he’s right–you TOTALLY deserve it, and the joy it brings you is very clear. I don’t think I’ve ever seen you so overcome as when you saw T’s model on her dining room table! And now you have your very own, reunited from some time long ago, ready to sing just for you. Congratulations friend!

Congrats on your new baby. And mama, you deserve that self indulgence! Please do a series on all the lovely things you’ve made for yourself – perhaps posing in them in the Big Apple.

How sweet! I am so happy for you! It is a beauty. The lighter model is lovely. I saw some in black that still had the original paint, but I have to admit, this one is a real beauty! I just won a new machine last night, I hope my luck is a good as yours. It is an old Necchi, with attachments, made in Japan, by Janome. I can hardly wait.
